They call the stuff "copy film" now. I did have to explain exactly why I wanted the lost commodity (to make a duplicate of one of those two-part handwritten forms not printed on NCR paper).

>They used to say, make sure you get your carbons, too.

For a while, they had an interim stage in the development of three-part forms for the Bartizan imprinter. One set of copies used NCR paper. The other used carbon paper, but the carbon paper sheet had the customer receipt copy on it. It was designed so you would "get your carbons" automatically. But the back of the customer receipt would shed black dye when it was touched. Guess it was cheaper that way. I so detested that particular type of form that I would stick the customer receipt copy on wide tape so it would not shed ink.

The last time I saw a Bartizan imprinter used was in March 2013 when I bought an iPhone 5. The Apple Store had the line to their credit card processor down, so they had to call for authorization and run the card through the Bartizan as in the good old days. I don't know how long before that I had heard the distinctive sound of the Bartizan in a store. I have seen stores where the network was down and they had paper charge slips but no Bartizan imprinter place the card down on a table, put the slip over it, and rub with the side of an ink pen. I've seen other stores where they handwrote the card number and expiration date on the slip.

Mad, I know about those 12 hour days. With the driving back and forth, I have 2-3 hours added to each work day.

Hello there Hat, Gold, Go4 and Dirt!!!

Snappy, hope all is well......heh, heh you said Duty!!! sorry!!

Audio, I think there are pluses and minus to each situation over long lengths of time with the key being....finding your soulmate. The person that completes you. Being a hopeless romantic that has been beaten down my life, I still know they are out there...somewhere.

Doc, I remember playing with the carbon papers as well. I still remember gas stations and restaurants in the early 90's that still used the manual slide, carbon imprint based pads.

Sneaker, thanks for the history lesson. It is always intriguing to see humble beginnings of companies.

Back when credit cards were not as widely accepted as they are now, I lived in Wichita, Kansas and I wanted to make a purchase at a Kansas City high-end audio store. I called them up and asked "Do you take [either MasterCard or VISA, don't remember which one I had]?" They said, "Not only do we take them, we hand them back after we run them through the imprinter!"

And gas stations. My late father had a Standard of Indiana (Amoco) card that dated back to 1958. I got one that dated to 1978. Then, when I moved out of the area where Amoco (now BP) did business, I didn't use it and they eventually non-renewed me. General-purpose bankcards are better for gasoline now, gasoline cards used to have some pretty good loyalty provisions but now most of the plans require you buy 45 gallons a month to get a nickel a gallon discount. I don't do 45 gallons in a month unless I'm on vacation like I am now.

>Don't remember any Visa or Discover back then.

VISA was BankAmericard (started by Bank of America) originally, and it dated back to 1958.

Discover was originally a project started by Sears in 1985. When it was first started up, merchant penetration wasn't good. It has significantly improved, but you run into places that take only MasterCard and VISA.

>As I got older, the name changed to charge cards.

IIRC, the shape also changed. Charge plates were generally narrower and longer than charge cards.

>I remember hearing about AMEX but they were rather particular
>about who they gave credit to (not any more)

The American Express Card first started in 1958.

>along with Diners Club (are they still around).

Diners Club, the grandaddy of them all, is still around. It has bounced from owner to owner through the years.

You didn't mention Carte Blanche, another oddball travel and entertainment card. It's now a sub-brand of Diners Club that has a higher cachet (and annual fee) than the ordinary Diners Club card.

>Somewhere along the line, MC showed up

MasterCard was originally MasterCharge and dates back to about the same time as BankAmericard. Many of the banks in California started a consortium to compete with BankAmericard.

>and then Visa

VISA was the old BankAmericard, they went with a shorter name that didn't have the name of a particular bank in it.

Bank of America still issues BankAmericard VISA cards, but they're the only one to use the "BankAmericard" name.

>and they went mainstream and everyone started
>calling them credit cards.

There is a difference between a credit card and a charge card. You can't carry a balance on a charge card, they have to be paid off every month.

>Don't have a debit card as I don't see the point. I'd rather charge it
>and get the cash back bonus or just pay cash.

I use debit cards when there is some sort of advantage to me. I have a checking account where if you make ten signature-based debit card purchases a month, they raise the interest rate they pay on the account from 0.05% to 0.30%. Also, there's a chain of food and liquor stores in Texas that takes debit cards as cash. I'd rather use the debit card and PIN that go get cash.

Btw, this is just for you...ICE OUT on Lake Mille Lacs (large lake in the middle of MN if you're looking at a map). There is actual non melted snow in one of the pictures near the house but the big piles of white stuff is actually the ice that was out on the lake. Very windy here last night and all day today and the ice gets to moving a bit and breaks up and then the waves on the lake just carry it into shore, sometimes over roads...depending on the lake and wind direction.

rj, no I am not taking summer classes. I did that last year, so other than a couple weeks off in August and for Christmas, I have been in school continuously for almost 2 years. I really need a break now. Fortunately I only have one final left, which is on thursday. I might be working at school this summer though. I am thinking of applying to the veterinary diagnostic lab, or possibly being a horseback riding teaching assistant.

My friends were great. Many people wished Mom Happy Mothers Day. Many kept their eyes on each of them. Glad weather finally started to warm and sun came out.
Just remembered, no photos. Wonder if it will be eithers last picnic.

Rain Soaked Saturday Here.

Snappy, that is some quality stuff. I have experienced two of those myself.

Dirt, I was given a lesson by an elderly black lady that worked at JC Pennys about charge cards. She explained that Charge Cards are actual cards from a particular store where credit cards were like Visa, MC, AMEX, Discover. I told her that I would not use either one because I had a debit card. She laughed and said, honey its still a Visa. Guess she had the last word...because I wasn't getting the point across that a debit came from checking account that YES was backed by a Visa for overdraft purposes but was like writing a check that immediately came out my account. Aargh!

Hello there Doc.

Rebel, concentrate on those finals. Are you going to school this summer?

RR, Study hard. :)

MadDog, I think that gofor is out fishing. The opener starts at 12:01am. Most of the lakes in northern MN are still frozen so all the fishing crazies will be in the metro area where the lakes are a balmy 34 degrees. Brrrr. There will be a bait shortage as the people who raise bait can't get to the leeches and minnows because the lakes are frozen. I can just see it now...a few beers nad people will start fighting over leeches. lol

snappyray, LOL, those are pretty funny and scary.

True story, I went to Culvers the other day and didn't have enough cash so I asked "do you take charge cards?" I got a blank stare from both people at the registers. I thought maybe I was speaking a foreign language until I realized I had to phrase it different..."do you take credit cards?" Oh, yes we do.

Good thing I didn't ask if they took "Charge Plates". lol

Have a good day, unless you have other plans.

Our society is doomed..............

IDIOT SIGHTING
I handed the teller @ my bank a withdrawal slip for $400.00
I said "May I have large bills, please"
She looked at me and said "I'm sorry sir, all the bills are the same size."
When I got up off the floor I explained it to her....

IDIOT SIGHTING
When my husband and I arrived at an automobile dealership to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. 'Hey,' I announced to the technician, 'it's open!' His reply: 'I know. I already got that side.'

This was at the Ford dealership in Canton,MS

IDIOT SIGHTING
We had to have the garage door repaired.
The Sears repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener.
I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one Sears made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower.
He shook his head and said, 'Lady, you need a 1/4 horsepower.' I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4.
He said, 'NO, it's not..' Four is larger than two.'

We haven't used Sears repair since.

IDIOT SIGHTING
My daughter and I went through the McDonald's take-out window and I gave the clerk a $5 bill.
Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her a quarter.
She said, 'you gave me too much money.' I said, 'Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar bill back.
She sighed and went to get the manager, who asked me to repeat my request.
I did so, and he handed me back the quarter, and said 'We're sorry but we could not do that kind of thing.'
The clerk then proceeded to give me back $1 and 75 cents in change.

Do not confuse the clerks at McD's.

IDIOT SIGHTING IN FOOD SERVICE
My daughter went to a local Taco Bell and ordered a taco.
She asked the person behind the counter for 'minimal lettuce.'
He said he was sorry, but they only had iceburg lettuce.
-- From Kansas City
IDIOT SIGHTING
I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked,
'Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?'
To which I replied, 'If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?'
He smiled knowingly and nodded, 'That's why we ask.'

Happened in Birmingham , Ala.

IDIOT SIGHTING
The stoplight on the corner buzzes when it's safe to cross the street.
I was crossing with an intellectually challenged coworker of mine. She asked if I knew what the buzzer was for.
I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red.
Appalled, she responded, 'What on earth are blind people doing driving?!'

She was a probation officer in Wichita , KS IDIOT SIGHTING
At a good-bye luncheon for an old and dear coworker who was leaving the company due to 'downsizing,'
our manager commented cheerfully, 'This is fun. We should do this more often.'
Not another word was spoken. We all just looked at each other with that deer-in-the-headlights stare.

This was a lunch at Texas Instruments.

IDIOT SIGHTING
I work with an individual who plugged her power strip back into itself
and for the sake of her life, couldn't understand why her system would not turn on.

A deputy with the Dallas County Sheriff’s office, no less.

How would you pronounce this child's name?
"Le-a"
Leah?? NO
Lee - A?? NOPE
Lay - a?? NO
Lei?? Guess Again.
This child attends a school in Kansas City, Mo.
Her mother is irate because everyone is getting her name wrong.
It's pronounced "Ledasha".
When the Mother was asked about the pronunciation of the name, she said, "the dash don't be silent."

SO, if you see something come across your desk like this please remember to pronounce the dash.
If dey axe you why, tell dem de dash don't be silent.

Snappy, Thanks!

MD, That would only be a start, as rj says. Need something even more effective. Alas, ...

dg, Glad you're finally warming, thawing.

Another long day of parents...

Back to another pick of the axe on the ole rock pile.

Snappy, that is a great one. That's why you never judge a book by its cover and why chances should be left up to God.

Gold, had a School Fair for my youngest that I volunteered to work Friday. Always a plus to get to see him when it's not my week.

SKS, welcome aboard. I have known quite a few people living in a loveless marriages for different reasons. It is very difficult and the kids end up knowing anyway. I worry from seeing several of my friends growing up in homes like that being able to be a good spouse without having a good example to show them. I guess as long as you show love and compassion, they will reflect it.
