Audi's Locus It's a done deal. In order to reduce U.S. dependency on foreign oil the federal government has mandated that auto manufacturers produce vehicles that comply with new CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) standards requiring each car company's fleet of vehicles to reach an average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.
How are they going to do that? Forbes gives you a peak at the future in the link below that shows many of the emerging automotive engineering innovations already under way.
The changes we'll soon see focus on the following:
Weight reduction. Look for more use of lighter materials such as plastic, aluminum and carbon fiber.
Sleek Aerodynamics...because half of an engine's power is spent overcoming...

Man I don't mind diesel, I just wish it would go lower in price than the more refined gasoline grades. Oh, well, it'll probably climb in price as more ppl turn to diesel engines, all the way crying the old "supply vs. demand" adage that only really means what "they" want it to in a given scenario.

There is pressure from those who produce crude oil to sell it. If demand goes down so will prices and most producers are "stuck" if they can't sell all of it. Supply and demand. Always is. Always was. Always will be.

The higher the vehicle MPG, the less demand for fuel, the higher priced fuel will be. The oil companies will keep their profit margin, no matter what the MPG is! Will still need vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a reasonable cost and a good value for the money. I will continue to drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, old, different, EV, Inbred, concept or anything else.

You folks are plain silly. Don't you realize that as as mpg goes up, gas price will increase to maintain the same revenue flow?

as for 50+ mpg, VW's Jetta TDI already has that and European cars (where btw the driving speed is on average a good bit higher than in the US), have on average better mileage than in the US. Oh yea... they don't have too many deaths either. And most vehicles are pretty comfortable, except for 400+ lb blimps...

Nothing that takes effect in 15 years is a done deal. We will be part of china by then. The central committee will make that decision for us.

Smart people will buy cars from places that will use natural gas. Here in america we do not have the sense to build CNG cars. After all, we elected obamma or can we just blame that one on "ACORN".

From the article, "Automakers will thus have to dig deep into their engineering bags of tricks to make tomorrow’s cars and trucks more fuel efficient without the wholesale downsizing and de-powering that rocked the industry in the 1980’s."

Good article and info, as long as these remain practical and functional for the average family. Matchbox size cars not only are not useful but can be deadly in an accident involving a more normally sized vehicle.

In order to reduce U.S. dependency on foreign oil, we should switch all cars and trucks to LNG/CNG....
Whats the MPG of a PLUG-IN CNG HYBRID????

Greater use of diesel power. Europeans have enjoyed the performance and fuel economy of diesel-powered vehicles for decades and their popularity is growing in the U.S. If we continue to see fuel prices climb higher year after year, that could turbo-charge this trend.

Any one working on a Diesel Hybrid, and whats the MPG???

The quoted "estimated" mileage on cars is that based on pure gas or a gas/ethanol mix?

Its a nice idea... but un practical. America does not want microscopic roller skates to get from here to there much less trying to bring home a load of groceries.

If they'd stop putting crappy ethanol in the gasoline, a lot of cars could do over 40 mpg.

Weight reduction typically means more people will die in accidents. Will the semi's need to downsize also?

I didn't think so!
